My work sent me to New York this past week. It was my first trip to New York. It was work during the day and most times after work, I was too exhausted to do anything but have dinner then go back to the hotel to sleep.
While in New York, I was planning on meeting this girl I used to date in Hawaii. We met about 15 years ago when she was a student here in Hawaii. We went out a couple of times and when I thought things were going to get more serious, she graduated and moved to New York to be a stock broker….
Over the years we managed to keep in touch. She would come back to Hawaii to visit and would always ask me to visit her in New York but I never had the time nor did I have the desire to travel.
I was staying in Manhattan and decided to give her a call. I wasn’t sure if she kept the same phone number. I tried calling and was pleasantly surprised to hear her voice on her voice mail. I left a message and hung up. (Your cell phone number is like your Social Security number I guess…You have the same number till you die….)
She called me back and was really excited to hear from me. She scolded me for not visiting her once since her move to NY 13 years before. I apologized and told her, “Well, HERE I AM!!”.
She laughed and told me, “This is the first time you’re visiting me in 13 years. What’s so ironic is that I moved to San Francisco about three months ago!” She had resigned from her job and moved to San Fran with her second husband. She invited me to visit her if I was going to stop at San Fran on my way home from NY, but I told her I was going through LA back to Hawaii. We had a good laugh about our timing throughout the years.
In April, on my way back from Switzerland, I will stop through San Fran and I told her we can meet then. She said she is looking forward to it.
Looking back at our track record, I won’t hold my breath!
